Writing Wilde – Oscar Wilde’s Biographers

Dr. Aaron Eames, editor of Oscariana for the Oscar Wilde Society, discusses some of Oscar Wilde’s biographers through 1954 in this talk at the Society’s 30th annual summer luncheon. Wilde wrote in The Critic as Artist: “Every great man nowadays has his disciples, and it is always Judas who writes the biography.” Dr. Eames focuses on six biographers and asks, were they disciples or Judases? He covers Robert Sherard, Frank Harris, Hesketh Pearson, St. John Ervine, Boris Brasol and Lord Alfred Douglas.

This talk was recorded on 12 August 2023 at Magdalen College, Oxford, Wilde’s alma mater.
