About The Event

February 22, 2025
12:00 - 15:00

2025 will be the 125th anniversary of the death of the poet Ernest Dowson and to mark the occasion there will be a revised edition of Jad Adams’ biography Madder Music, Stronger Wine: The Life of Ernest Dowson, Poet and Decadent. This is a new version of the classic biography of the ultimate decadent poet who wrote some of the most quoted lyrics in English verse – including the titles of two of the greatest twentieth century films: Gone with the Wind and Days of Wine and Roses – but died penniless at the age of thirty-two. Jad’s non-fiction books include Decadent Women: Yellow Book Lives, Gandhi: Naked Ambition, Hideous Absinthe: A History of the Devil in a Bottle and Women and the Vote: A World History.

Jad has kindly agreed to speak at an author’s lunch on Saturday 22 February 2025 on the subject of Dowson’s relationship with Oscar Wilde. The lunch will be held at The George in the Strand, 213 Strand, London and it will cost £60 for a two-course meal with coffee. This price does not include drinks but there will be a bar in the room that will be open throughout the event.
