Oscar Wilde Society Summer Lunch – Saturday 30 July 2022

Now and then it is a joy to have one’s table red with wine and roses.

Join us in Oscar’s honour for our annual summer lunch in the convivial environs of his alma mater, Magdalen College, Oxford OX1 4AU.

12:15 p.m. for Pimm’s (or pressé) in The Chaplain’s Quad followed by a three course lunch with wine at 13:00 in the Terry Newport Room and Ante Room.

Lunch will be followed by a talk entitled “The Choice of Hercules: Oscar Between Ruskin and Pater” by Dr Bernard Richards, an Emeritus Fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was a Fellow in English from 1972 to 1996. He is the author of English Poetry of the Victorian Period in the Longman Literature in English series, and is the author of more than 350 scholarly articles and reviews, ranging from John Donne to 20th-century authors. His most recent work is a chapter on unwritten Ruskin for the forthcoming Ruskin Companion (Cambridge University Press). He is also currently printing (privately) Praeterita Continued, a completion of Ruskin’s unfinished autobiography. Dr Richards is an expert on John Ruskin (1819-1900), whom we know to have been a formative influence on Oscar.

The price for the reception, three courses and wine is £80 per member. Places will be given in order of payment. Members may also purchase tickets for a guest. Please email our Events Secretary, Matthew, at membership@oscarwildesociety.co.uk by 1 July to reserve a ticket, making payment by PayPal preferably to  membership@oscarwildesociety.co.uk.

We are only able to accept cheques if absolutely necessary – please email membership@oscarwildesociety.co.uk for details if you have no option but to pay by cheque.

When reserving, please also include any dietary requirements and/or details of any allergies, which will be passed on to Magdalen College.
